Accomplishments
  • Completed a migration from a Solaris based web cluster to a Linux based web cluster. This migration was started by the previous administrator.
  • Evaluated and redesigned the network backup system. The old system used Legato Networker and hardware that was failing. The new system uses a more flexible combination of hard drive based short term backups using rsync and monthly tape archives using amanda.
  • Rebuilt the email system incorporating SPAM and virus filters using postfix, amavisd-new, clamav, spamassassin, sqlgrey, and dovecot sieve scripts.
  • Replaced an outdated SquirrelMail installation with an up to date version of Horde to provide webmail access.
  • Added RAID redundancy to all of the Linux servers. Used software RAID for many of the servers, and installed new hardware RAID cards in others.
  • Implemented an automatic failover to a backup server for the OpenLDAP directory.

Accomplishments
  • Arranged the installation of a departmental firewall. Before the firewall was in place, all of our machines were wide open on the public internet.
  • Migrated from a dual-authentication NISplus/Windows NT system to an integrated authentication system using OpenLDAP and Samba. UNIX/Linux systems authenticated directly to OpenLDAP, and Samba provided an NT4-style domain frontend to the OpenLDAP directory for Windows authentication.
  • Migrated from sendmail to postfix with SASL on the mail server. Used amavis, clamav, and spamassassin to help keep users' Inboxes clean.
  • Migrated users' mail folders from mbox to maildir to provide more flexibility in email organization.
  • Installed Horde to provide a web interface to the mail server, as well as an integrated calendar, task list, trouble-ticket system, etc.
  • Provided training for users on various topics, including PGP Email Signatures, SSH Tunnelling using PuTTy, UNIX command-line usage, and more.
  • Removed telnet access to our servers in favor of ssh.
  • Created and maintained a subversion repository for use by projects that could benefit from a versioning system, such as the department website.
  • Implemented various monitoring solutions to keep a close eye on the health of the computer systems using nagios, mrtg, and some custom scripts.
  • There were no successful security breaches or virus outbreaks once my security policies were in place.
  • Developed a number of methods to incorporate some of the more useful features of Active Directory into our domain without having access to an actual Active Directory. i.e. Group Policies.
  • Developed plans to migrate away from our NT4-style domain to Active Directory. (not completed due to leaving my position)
